Touchskärm – Input or Output Device?

Starting with the fact that a Touchskärm is a device which works both as input and output device. Many of the people get confused with this fact and have pretty hard time while convincing their minds to believe it.

“How can a device do both jobs of input and output”? If you ask this question to yourself, then you are not alone. This question often boggles the minds of many people.

To know the answer to this question, you need to dig deeper a little bit.

First, tear down the word itself, Touch+Skärm. You see, the word is made up of two different words. Similarly, the Touchskärm is made up of two components too.

  1. Touch
  2. Skärm

These two components work differently yet they are incomplete without each other. One of them is an output device, and one of them is an input device.

Now it is time to unravel the mystery.
  1. Touch

Yes, it is an input device. A touch is an outer layer of the Touchskärm. It is the surface where we touch, and the device senses the location of our touch.

Talking about the most popular, Capacitive Touch. It is a thin layer of glass which works as an insulator. But it is coated with a very fine layer of a transparent conductor, e.g. Indium Tin Oxide (ITO). This layer of conductor forms an electrostatic field on the surface of Touch Layer. Therefore, when you touch the surface, you cause a distortion into the electrostatic field. It happens because our human body is also a conductor. Hence, the location of distortion can be measured as the change in the capacitance of the surface. Then the information is further sent to the processor.

This is how the touch of any capacitive Touchskärm works.

      2 .Skärm

It is no longer mystery after knowing the “Touch” is the input part. Therefore, it automatically makes the skärm the output part. This is an electronic visual display which displays the information sent by the processing system.

Nowadays, the LCD, LED and AMOLED displays are widely used in various type of devices, such as ATM, Laptops, Kiosks, Tablets, and smartphones, etc. Make sure that these displays do not respond to your touch without using the “Touch” surface.

Therefore, these two are used together, and it makes them a complete Touchskärm.

Finally, you have the satisfying answer to your question. Now you may relax. It is good to know about the various aspects of the technology around us. Although, it is literally impossible to imagine our lives without the Touchskärm. These are everywhere. But we cannot deny the fact that they are helping us a lot to make our daily life easier and faster.
